Thursday 9 October 2025
3 CPD Units  Live webinar
9:00 AM 12:15 PM

Join us for a live online course examining critical thinking skills for lawyers, while earning three CPD units. Topics will include:

Critical thinking in dispute resolution – Laurence Boulle, Director, Independent Mediation Services Ltd
This session will consider the changing practitioner roles in current dispute resolution (DR) practice and thinking, and will address three issues:

  • Critical thinking and the Representative – the significance of personal and professional conflict styles in DR
  • Critical thinking and the Client – using practitioner knowledge, skills and mindsets in managing clients and their expectations
  • Critical thinking and the Other – how to approach representatives of counterparties, conciliators and mediators

Unpacking complex ethical conundrums - Paul Monaghan, Senior Ethics Solicitor, Law Society of NSW
This session will focus on:

  • Resolving ethical problems in practice using an ethics and regulatory framework.
  • Advising clients, and the nature of instructions.
  • Using AI to help in practice and resolve conflicts.
  • Dealing with common conflicts and resolving them, using common scenarios in practice

Thinking outside the box when managing your practice - Katherine Lau, Team Leader, Professional Support Unit, Law Society of New South Wales
This session will revisit the fundamentals of legal practice management, including in relation to law practice advertising and marketing, client engagement and communication, and supervision of staff. By the end of this session, practitioners will understand how to tailor their practice management systems and processes to suit their individual practice needs.

For Mandatory rule 6.1 course
Practitioners should inform themselves of Rule 6.1 of the Legal Profession Uniform Continuing Professional Development (Solicitors) Rules 2015 which sets out the requirements for the four (4) mandatory CPD areas for NSW legal practitioners – (a) ethics and professional responsibility; (b) practice management and business skills; (c) professional skills; and (d) substantive law. It is the responsibility of each legal practitioner to self-assess as to whether a particular educational activity extends their knowledge and skills in areas that are relevant to their practice needs or professional development. If so, then the practitioner may claim one (1) "unit” for each hour of attendance, refreshment breaks not included.

If you self-assess that this particular educational activity extends your knowledge and skills, this program may allow you to claim three (3) of the mandatory areas: (a) ethics and professional responsibility; (b) practice management and business skills; and (c) professional skill.
