Course Overview

The commencement of the Legal Profession Uniform Law on 1 July 2015 introduced the requirement for persons to be appointed as an external examiner, that person must be a member of a class of persons as designated in Rule 65 of the Legal profession Uniform General Rules 2015 and have successfully completed a course of education approved by the Legal Services Council from time to time after consultation with the relevant designated local regulatory authority. 

An external examiner is required to be appointed by a law practice to complete the External Examiners Report. The report is required to be lodged by a law practice that has received, held or disbursed trust money (excluding Transit Money), once in every financial year.

Rule 65(2) of the Legal Profession Uniform General Rules 2015 provides that the following classes of persons may be appointed as external examiner under Part 4.2 of the Legal Profession Uniform Law.


To be eligible to apply for accreditation you must be: 

  • A member of CAANZ, or 
  • A member of CPA Australia, or 
  • A member of IPA,  

with a current certificate of Public Practice, or 

  • A registered company auditor. 

Eligibility based on review of your registration entitles you to sit the course approved by the Legal Services Council and conducted by the Law Society of New South Wales.
